Greenland vs Africa True Size: Visualizing Mercator Map Distortion

On a standard world map, Greenland looks almost as big as Africa. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger. Here is why the Mercator projection gets this so wrong.

Open almost any classroom wall map or web map and Greenland appears roughly the same size as Africa. It is one of the most famous distortions in cartography — and it is not close to accurate.

The Numbers

  • Greenland's actual area: 2,166,086 km²
  • Africa's actual area: ~30,370,000 km²
  • True size difference: Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland

Quick Comparison: - Africa could fit 14 Greenlands inside its borders - Africa alone is larger than the USA, China, India, and most of Europe combined - Greenland's on-screen size on a Mercator map is roughly the same as Africa's, despite the huge real difference

Why the Mercator Projection Distorts Size

The Mercator projection was designed in 1569 for one job: helping sailors navigate using straight compass bearings. To keep those bearing lines straight, the projection has to stretch landmasses more and more as they move away from the equator. Greenland sits between roughly 60°N and 83°N, deep in the zone where that stretching is most extreme. Africa straddles the equator, where Mercator distortion is close to zero. The result is a map where high-latitude countries — Greenland, Canada, Russia — look dramatically larger than they really are, while equatorial regions like Africa and South America look smaller.

If Greenland were placed at the equator instead of the Arctic, it would shrink to a fraction of its apparent size on a standard Mercator map — even though its actual land area wouldn't change at all.

Why This Still Matters

The Mercator projection remains the default for web maps (including Google Maps) because it preserves angles and shapes locally, which is genuinely useful for navigation and street-level detail. But it was never designed to be used for judging the relative size of countries and continents, and generations of students have absorbed a skewed sense of world geography as a result. Africa is large enough to contain the United States, China, India, Japan, and most of Western Europe simultaneously — a fact that is almost invisible on a standard Mercator map.

Other Mercator Distortions Worth Knowing

  • Russia looks nearly twice as large as Africa on Mercator maps; in reality Africa is about 1.5 times bigger.
  • Alaska appears comparable in size to Brazil; Brazil is actually about 5 times larger.
  • Scandinavia looks roughly the same size as India; India is more than 3 times larger.

Fun Facts

  • Greenland is the world's largest island but ranks only 13th among countries and territories by land area.
  • Africa is home to 54 recognized countries and spans four hemispheres.
  • The Robinson and Equal Earth projections were both developed specifically to reduce this kind of size distortion for general-purpose world maps.
