DR Congo is dominated by the Congo Basin, the second-largest rainforest on Earth after the Amazon, covering much of the country's centre in dense, largely roadless tropical forest. The Congo River, the world's second-deepest, loops through the country and once formed the basis of its colonial-era name, the Belgian Congo.

Decades of conflict, weak infrastructure, and a colonial-era economic structure focused on raw resource extraction rather than domestic industry have kept DR Congo poor despite immense mineral wealth: the country holds a large share of the world's cobalt reserves, essential for batteries and electronics manufacturing, much of which is exported unprocessed.
